Some composters don't accept compostable plastics in their streams due to concerns about persistent contamination from non-compostable plastics. If contamination remains in their compost product, it drastically decreases its value.

EsterCycle accepts all compostable plastics in a mixed stream. This also removes them from recycling streams, where they are viewed as contamination, and keeps the valuable materials in the supply chain.

After the mixed plastics are broken down with EsterCycle, the soup of plastic building blocks are separated and purified so that plastics can be remade with properties that match first generation material.

EsterCycle uses a simple alcohol solvent and a cheap catalyst to break down plastics to their fundamental building blocks under mild conditions. These building blocks are then separated and purified so they can be remade into recycled plastics with properties that match first generation material while drastically reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
